Aim of the research

To understand how deaf people in Ghana experience law, rights and everyday barriers, and to use these experiences to develop and improve the Deaf Legal Theory (DLT) model.

Methodology

  1. One-to-one conversations in Ghanaian Sign Language with a deaf research assistant (approximately 30–60 minutes) at the GNAD office in Accra or in other safe community places that you agree to, such as community centres or schools for the deaf. A private room will be used so you feel comfortable and your conversation is confidential.
  2. You will be asked to share your everyday experiences of barriers, support and interactions with law and services.
  3. You will receive a voucher to say thank you for taking part. Travel costs will be paid separately.

Data protection

  1. Your name will not be used. We will use a made-up name so you cannot be identified.
  2. Your data will only be used for this research project.
  3. Your data will be stored in the UK in line with UK data protection law.
  4. Video recordings and signed consent forms will be uploaded directly to secure UWE Bristol storage (OneDrive/SharePoint).
  5. Only the research team will be able to access your data.
  6. Only non-identifying quotes will be used in reports and publications.
  7. Your data will be anonymised and then the video recordings will be deleted.

In cases of problems or complaints, the researcher, the principal investigator or the university’s research ethics team, can be contacted on the email addresses above.  If you feel upset or confused because of taking part in this project, you can stop at any time and speak to the research assistant. You can also contact GNAD for support.
