Grounding Deaf Legal Theory in Ghana

University of the West of England Vice-Chancellor’s Early Career Researcher Scheme (August 2025 – July 2027)

Grounding DLT in Ghana is a two-year pilot project that aims to expand the Deaf Legal Theory (DLT) model to reflect Global Majority perspectives, starting with Ghana. The project is being delivered in collaboration with the Ghana National Association of the Deaf (GNAD). Professor Annelies Kusters (Heriot-Watt University) is Senior Research Mentor for the project.

Deaf Legal Theory Foundation

The Deaf Legal Theory Foundation (DLTF) is currently being developed, and we hope to start delivering a Deaf Legal Theorist training programme from October 2025.

The DLTF will be a deaf-led legal think tank, research partner, and training provider dedicated to transforming legal systems for deaf communities worldwide.

Co-Producing the Deaf Legal Theory Model

University of the West of England Arts and Humanities Research Council Impact Acceleration Account International Impact Fund

The aim of the project was to scale up the impact of DLT. We used the co-production method and worked with three sources of expertise: citizens (people with lived experience), practitioners (for application), and academics (for rigour) to revise and refine the DLT Model.

Edited volume

Dr Dai O’Brien and Dr Rob Wilks are currently working on developing an edited volume to be titled Developing Deaf Legal Theory.

The edited volume aims to bring together a number of exposés with the objective of bringing DLT to the attention of legal and deaf studies scholars world-wide as a theoretical perspective to be applied to any legal study that involves deaf people.
